Why Great Web Designers are Expensive (and Worth it!)

by Nicole Foster

There are many great web designers out there today who have years of experience. They have had dozens of clients and created many, amazing websites.

Now, say you want a website by one of these amazing designers. You promptly email them asking for a quote and they respond back to you with a figure. Your jaw is dropped and you see a figure in the thousands. While that may seem like a lot to you, it is actually industry standard for web designers.

You’re probably saying, “Are you serious? I’m not hiring this web designer for that money!” Well, not to offend you, but that is the wrong response and here is why you should hire that web designer.

They have many years of experience

The first thing you will notice about a great web designer is how long they have been designing for. Once you figure out how long they have been designing for, you’ll notice it immediately in their work because it is well done and beautiful. The reason why most new designers charge less is because they have little experience in the field of design.

Whether you appreciate web design or not, the website created for your business can potentially bring you hundreds of new customers. Would you rather have an experienced designer creating that website or a new designer with little experience?

They know how your customers tick

Somebody who is experienced in the field of web design is also experienced in user experience and user research. Experienced designers who have those skills to apply to your website will guarantee a new stream of customers to your business. They know if they create a website that is user friendly and specifically targeted towards your specific audience, they can successful convince new customers to take a look at your business.

New designers have not learned these skills, thus they will base solely off design. While, it is important to have a great design, a great design can become immediately ineffective if the website doesn’t capture the customer’s interest.

They are very good at client relations

When you interact with clients on a regular basis, you become very good at client relations, and understanding the client’s needs and wants. This is very prevalent in experienced web designers because they specifically listen to those needs and wants, and apply it to the client’s websites. Also, experienced designers are reliable or they would not have the reputation of a great designer.

New, inexperienced designers have worked with little to no clients, so they are inexperienced with client relations. They may be unreliable as they are new to everything. Since they are starting out, they have no bad or good reputation, which is risky to take a chance on.

What is your opinion?

We all know great web designers either personally or just by name. What would make you hire a great web designer even though they’re expensive? How are they worth it to you? Answer those questions in the comments below.

What a great article. Experience is what clients are paying for, too bad some don’t understand that.

Nice article and a very valid point.

I’m at a stage where I am trying to figure out what to charge for work I do, so this has come at the right time for me.

I am thinking of making my services into a ‘concept’ rather than ‘just another web guy’

I’ll post back and let people know how it goes :-)
