Quick Usability Tips to Jump Into UX
Making your website usable is essential to obtaining more visitors. Visitors who do not understand and cannot work with a website will not stay on it. This creates a domino effect and soon, others will leave too.
UX may be a tricky thing to jump into. With A/B testing, wireframes, classification schemes and other things you may not know about, it can be overwhelming. Luckily, there are a few widely known usability tips that will help you get started.
Tell them where they are
It is important to have the user know where they are constantly. Searching through many pages will make the user lose track and unless it is known where they are, the user will click out of the website.
- Always have your Site Name on the page
- Always have the Page Name on the page
- Let them know their current location by highlighting a section of the primary navigation
Tell them where to go
Let the user know where they should go to achieve their goal with your website. Whether it’s pointing them to your portfolio if you’re a designer or pointing them to the product information page if you’re a business, the user needs to be directed to their destination.
- Make the navigation links easy to understand and labeled properly
- Utilize Call To Action buttons and make them standout
- Create a great tagline/site description to let them know what you’re all about and what is available to them
Keep their attention
Lastly and most importantly, you need to keep the user’s attention. Users have short attention spans. They scan through websites instead of reading them thoroughly to learn information, so you need to adjust your website accordingly.
- Keep the content short and to the point
- Make your website memorable to the user in a positive way
- Clear visual page hierarchy so the user can keep their attention on important parts of your website
- Bold and italicize important words that you want the user to notice (don’t go overboard)
